About
Beethoven’s sonata Opus 27, No 2 is one of a number of three movement works which although written towards the end of his classical period, incorporate moods and energies which fortell the bridge to romanticism. The sonata movement is in strict classical form and is found in the last movement not the first. This last movement’s perpetual motion was a common practice of the classical period.
This sonata’s first movement is recognized by many lovers of music of varied genres in that it is often played separately. Many popular songs have used its theme, and you will even hear the theme as a basis for improvisation. However, not so broad an audience have heard the delicate minuet and trio of its middle movement or the driving rhythms of its more dynamic 3rd and final movement. This sonata is one of the so called “named” sonatas, like the pathetique and the appassionata. Though it is known by its silvery name stemming perhaps from its tranquil first movement, it is not program music and the name did not arise from Beethoven but rather was attached to the composition during its publishing.
